In an interview on the Actor’s Studio, Ricky Gervais, an atheist, explains his faith, or lack of it.

Gervais likes the idea of God. He went to Sunday School. He loved Jesus. But thanks in part to a conversation between his older brother and his mom, he is an atheist. He admits, “I wish there was a God, it’d be great. From what I’ve heard he’s brilliant.” He continues later, “If there is a God, why did he make me atheist?”

He’s not acting aggressive or rude. He’s not calling Christians stupid. I believe Gervais is being very candid and honest in his statements.

How do you respond to that question, “If there is a God, why did he make me atheist?”

God didn't make him an atheist, he chose to be one. God created us all with the free will to choose Him or to choose ourselves. Ricky Gervais is choosing himself. God doesn't want us to be robots and love Him because He makes us, He wants us to choose to love Him back the way He loves us. Atheists are simply choosing not to love God and choosing not to believe He exists. It has nothing to do with God's love or creation, it has to do with their choice and free will.

I was just going to say what Jen so eloquently said! Faith is a choice for God. Anything else is a choice for Satan. God wants us to choose to love Him, but won't force us to do so. I hope Mr. Gervais makes his choice for God while he still has time.

It's very interesting that something so important as belief/non-belief in God was settled once and for all at a very young age for Ricky. I wonder how many other decisions he made at the tender age of 8 are still alive within him. It seems odd he has not seriously challenged an important decision made when he had very little experience in life and was so easily influenced by family members. Where has his interest been in finding truth for himself as an adult? He admits to wishing there is a God. Even though he proclaims to be an atheist, it seems to me that the door to his heart has been opened just a crack. He had very complimentary things to say about Jesus. I have hope for Ricky to find God, do you?
